Historians of pacifism Peter Brock and Thomas Paul Socknat define pacifism “in the sense generally accepted in English-speaking areas” as “an unconditional rejection of all forms of warfare”. A pacifist rejects war and believes there are no moral grounds which can justify resorting to war. War, for the pacifist, is always wrong. Principled pacifism holds that at some point along the spectrum from war to interpersonal physical violence, such violence becomes morally wrong.
Pragmatic pacifism holds that the costs of war and interpersonal violence are so substantial that better ways of resolving disputes must be found. Pacifists generally reject theories of Just War. Some however, support physical violence for emergency defence of self or others. Others support destruction of property in such emergencies or for conducting symbolic acts of resistance like pouring red paint to represent blood on the outside of military recruiting offices or entering air force bases and hammering on military aircraft.
Not all nonviolent resistance sometimes also called civil resistance is based on a fundamental rejection of all violence in all circumstances.

Could I have been more proactive in taking care of myself and prevented some of the blisters? That simple reminder from a friend to take the time to take care of myself has stuck with me for years, and I often reflect back on this experience when I feel off balance here in Macedonia.
Do you love to hike, run, walk, knit, cook, write poetry, sing, dance? Do these things make you feel better in the US? Then you should probably continue to do them in the Peace Corps.

I had a doctor’s appointment on Friday and got back my latest lab results. I am very happy with these results: We had some questions that we wanted to ask the doctor, so that we could make sure we were the most educated as possible about risks, safety, etc. Unfortunately neither of us was totally satisfied with the doctor’s responses. She was extremely optimistic and positive about how very small the risks were, and overall seemed to have the opinion that this should not really be a big deal for us.
She was very confident in my stable health, medication, and lab results, and feels it would be highly unlikely for me to transmit to someone else. However, in all of her talking, she really was not able to present the hard statistics, numbers, percentages, research that we were both hoping she would be able to give us she either didn’t have them or she was trying to pull vague numbers from memory. In short, she just really didn’t sound like the most educated and up to date HIV doctor- I felt like we were more up to date on current research studies than she was.
